US President Announced New Division at HHS Committed to ‘Conscience and Religious Freedom’
In January 2018 the US president announced a new division at the Department of Health and Human Services that will focus on “conscience and religious freedom.” Religious freedom laws are often used to discriminate against and deny healthcare to women and LGBTQ people, including denying access to birth control or refusing to treat a trans person. Limiting access to reproductive healthcare harms women and limits their ability to work and educate themselves. LGBTQ people also face barriers to healthcare if they cannot find healthcare providers who are willing to treat them. Such limitations mean that women and LGBTQ people are not treated equally in society.
