Survey Finds Widespread Discrimination and Harassment of Trans Teachers
In March 2018 reporting of a survey of transgender and gender fluid teachers in the United States and Canada found widespread discrimination and harassment. Many of the teachers who responded said that their students were more accepting of their gender identity than adults at the school. Many have included LGBTQ topics in their teaching, and some have had students open up about their identities and orientations. Diverse leaders and authority figures, such as teachers, provide a safe space for students who may not be accepted in other places, including in their own families. Some of the teachers who responded said that they have moved out of state or left the profession. This can leave LGBTQ students more vulnerable, and it leaves trans and gender fluid teachers unequal.
