Officer Fired for Excessive Force Is Reinstated Due to Arbitration Process in Union Contract

In April 2017 an officer who was fired for excessive use of force was reinstated due to an arbitration process built into the police officer’s union contract. The fact that such a process allows for a violent officer to be placed back into a position of power and to possibly injure or kill someone is a symptom of systemic state violence. It also works against the argument that police brutality is about “a few bad apples.” If that were true, those officers could be completely relieved of their duties and denied access to the power that allowed them to be brutal in the first place.
