NY Teacher Directed to Stop Teaching Harlem Renaissance

In February 2018, which is Black History Month, a New York high school principal directed a teacher to stop teaching a lesson on the Harlem Renaissance. The reasoning provided is that she is an English teacher, not a social studies teacher. However, understanding the cultural context of the writers students are studying is a valuable part of understanding the writing itself. The direction from the principal tells black students that their history and their authors are not valued.
