Man Murdered After Deportation

An undocumented man was detained and later deported to Mexico, only to be murdered - likely by the same gangs that his family had fled from to enter the United States - six months later in September 2017. The United Nations defines a refugee as “someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence.” This individual met the definition of a refugee by the UN’s definition; however, he was treated solely as an undocumented individual who met the standards for deportation. He was also originally detained in an Austin courthouse, contributing to the ‘safe spaces’ controversy. ‘Safe spaces’ refers to the idea that ICE agents should be disallowed from detaining people in places that provide essential services, like courthouses, hospitals, and schools.
