Increase in Sexual Assault Reports in NY Jails

Data released by New York City reveals a spike in inmates claiming sexual assault by staff in city jails. The 2016 numbers reported in July 2017 more than double those of the previous year. An inmate advocate also noted that “the substantiation rate is ridiculous.” None of the 321 assaults reported in 2016 was found to be substantiated. Those in a position of authority have a responsibility to respect the rights of those detained in jails. The lack of accountability reflected in this report amounts to systemic abuse, which violates part of a social contract to treat our citizens as human beings with civil rights.
