IL Officer Shot and Killed a Black Man who had Detained an Active Shooter
In November 2018 an Illinois police officer shot and killed a black man who had detained an active shooter. The man killed by the officer was a security guard responding to a shooting inside the bar where he worked. According to initial reports, two police officers arrived on the scene, but only one officer fired at the black security guard. Initial reporting doesn’t include any attempt by the officers to deescalate or ask any questions before firing. This is an example of institutionalized racism, as the officer appeared to shoot first, seeing a black man with a gun, and ask questions later.
