FL Teacher Uses Racist, Sexist Assignment in Classroom

In April 2017 a Florida teacher used a classroom assignment to assess whether students were comfortable with “young black men” on the street, an “Arab” on an airplane, or a woman pastor. One student said the assignment was part of a lesson about accepting differences. However, asking questions about the students comfort level in these scenarios encourages students to consider whether these stereotypes are valid. This can perpetuate the marginalization of these groups.
