FL Former Police Chief Pleads Guilty to Framing Black People
In September 2018 a Florida former police chief pled guilty to framing black residents for burglaries to increase his department’s clearance rate. According to the linked article, “Although the three victims who were targeted were black, prosecutors did not consider race as a factor in the case.” The case will no doubt contribute to nationwide concerns about the treatment of black people by police, which includes a history of lying, violence, and a lack of transparency. False confessions, a factor in this Florida case, are often the result of police tactics, and contribute to the mass incarceration of black people. This is an example of institutionalized racism.
