Director of MI State Police Derided NFL Players for Protest

In September 2017, as professional athletes in the NFL kneeled during the national anthem before games, the director of the Michigan State Police in a social media post described the players as “rich, entitled, arrogant, ungrateful, anti-American degenerates.” Several players have said publicly that their protest is one of police brutality and systemic racism. To call them ungrateful refuses to acknowledge that, despite their success, they are still subject to racism and police violence and harassment. To call the protesting players degenerates suggests that they should assimilate to a norm that the players have expressed does not serve them.
