Chicago Police Baited Low Income Black Residents to Theft Charges
In August 2018 Chicago police participated in a sting using a bait truck filled with expensive shoes in a low income predominately black neighborhood. The city’s police department also has a low homicide clearance rate, largely attributed to distrust of the police. Baiting low income black residents to steal expensive items - in a state in which the felony theft threshold is $500 - could contribute to mass incarceration of black citizens and further reduce trust of police. This is an example of institutional racism.
